Xtreme Calorie Burner! Indian to Girdwood. Virtual Indoor Cycling Training / Spinning Fitness and Weight Loss Videos
It's 9:00 PM in Anchorage in July. The weather is a cool and clammy 60 degrees F. It has been raining and a few drizzles are still left. Fog blankets the hill sides and clears into the arm and a romantic mist entwines with the rain forest. Buried in the forest looms mystical creatures native to Alaska that meander throughout. Who knows what is lurking past that next turn? It is when you see a black bear fishing while a Bald Eagle soars overhead with prey in its talons that you know, without a doubt, that you are cycling in Alaska!
This is a nice recovery ride that follows Seward highway South of Anchorage towards the Girdwood ski resort. This ride is designed to provide an effort level ideal for weight loss and recovery. This is a high calorie burning workout.
This is an incredibly unique way to train! The entire workout data is on screen at all times allowing you the ability to pace yourself and set goals. Audio mentoring is available on one of the three sound tracks. Once you have figured out how the heads up dash works and you feel comfortable turning the mentor off, slip on your own headphones, listen to your own music and follow the on screen workout and enjoy the views!

Guest Post - One Year on, Marking the Occasion
Well, it's been just one year since Simon and Fearghal embarked on what has turned out to be a fascinating, emotional and eventful - to say the least - journey, not least for those of us following the lads through every day and every kilometre through all their trials and tribulations via their brilliant web updates and position reports. Our large school map stuck on the wall at home has so many pins stuck in it that I'm worried about the state of the plaster underneath!
Some of us thought it would be fitting to mark the occasion in some way, so on Sunday 1st November, fifteen hardy souls dragged themselves out of bed, looked at the rain pouring down outside, dragged the bikes out of the shed and set off on a re-run of the original 'start' route from Blackrock to Greystones. The forecast was poor: strong westerly winds and heavy showers.
We all assembled at a damp Blackrock College as before (by kind permission), and set off at 1pm. Miraculously, as we cycled up Mount Merrion Avenue, the sky lifted and the sun appeared. We turned southwards towards Greystones and the wind obligingly turned with us to give a following breeze. Now if that's not a good omen I don't know what is!
We cycled happily and in great good humour through a sunny Loughlinstown, Shankill and Bray. Even the slog up Bray Head didn't seem too daunting any more. There was a wonderful sense of cameraderie, a combined celebration of all that Simon and Fearghal have accomplished. Indeed, many people remarked on the fact that for them, not having cycled for many years, cycling has opened up a whole new perspective on life. So go on, give it a go...you'll be surprised!
We eventually reached the top of Bray Head and the whole panorama of Greystones and the Wicklow coastline opened up in front of us. A race down into Greystones saw then 60kph barrier broken for the first time by some, though this was of course nothing to compare with Simon's record!
Kitted out in our Aware tee shirts, we continued the celebration in Dann's pub in Greystones, where we all raised a glass to the continuing safety and ultimate success of Revoutioncycle. We made a collection for Aware, and even the local stallholders at the county market outside the pub were enthusiastic and helped us raise over 200 euro for this hugely worthwhile cause.
Can't wait till next summer's homecoming spin..better start training!
Hybrid EggRing and 8 speed hub-gears drive chain.
The hub-gears allow for very quick gear changes even when the system is under load.
The elliptical rings make it easier to pedal through the dead-spots where the pedaling forces are not being transfered to the rear wheel. This means that this bike can be pedaled slowly on steep hills without stalling. It also works as a traction control system reducing the likelihood of the rear wheel slipping or the front wheel lifting from the torque reaction.
By comparing the relative efficiencies of walking and running you can get a reasonable understanding of how an EggRing can be more efficient than the equivalent round chain ring. When you run you waste energy, because the walking motion is more energy efficient than running.
Riding a round ring on the flat is energy efficient but becomes less so as resistance forces (hills, mud , headwinds etc.) increase. This is because the rider decelerates as the pedals pass through the dead-spots, and then has to regain its speed in the power-stroke. An elliptical chain-ring, on the other hand, spends less time going through the dead-spot with the result that the rider will have less time in the deceleration phase. So, like walking, EggRings can reduce the energy needed to get from A to B. Instead of having to spin a round chainring in order to make sure you have enough momentum to get you through the next dead-spot, an EggRing can be turned slowly, with much less danger of not getting to the next power-stroke.
Does this have a use?
Well not to win races. Unless the course is so extreme that the riders repeatedly exhaust themselves and have to take rests.
However, the elliptical granny ring on my daughters bike does mean that she has now stopped whinging about how steep the hills are, and perseveres, riding slowly and steadily right to the top. Not the stuff of racing legend, but it does have a real potential for encouraging more people to ride bikes.
The Rollerbrakes are very smooth as they are filled with grease and self-servo to reduce finger strain. They give suburb control via their excellent modulation characteristics and are nearest equivalent of anti-lock brakes to be found on a bicycle.
